Carl joseph begas lurelei

Lurelei paintings by Carl Joseph Begas, 1835.

Lorelei is a rock in Rhine River and is a serious hazard. The name Lorelei came from a German legend about a beautiful maiden named Lorelei who waited for her lover at a shallow point of the Rhine River. However, he never returned, so she jumped off the rock to her death. It is said that her spirit remains at the rock seeking revenge against her unfaithful lover. Sailors are so enchanted by her beauty that they crash their ships into the rock or run aground in the shallow water.
