Clifford is based off of Clyde, a thief in America during the Great Depression. He was probably named Clifford as a translation mistake, If you compare Brenda and Clifford to a picture of Bonnie and Clyde, which can be found on wikipedia, they look very similar. Clifford was the son of a poor farmer and always got arrested. After being arrested several times, he focused on stealing grocery stores and gas stations.
