Ghost Guild Grounds 1-1[]

A Disturbing Letter

Narrator	<Player's name>'s Residence, Shibuya
Mira	Oh, Master! What are we going to do? I can't believe it... The Ghost Guild...
Narrator	Mira looks extremely upset. And it's no wonder. A very disturbing letter has been delivered from the Ghost Guild which says: The Ghost Guild has fallen. Everyone, remain on standby alert. Mira is beside herself with worry. It's written all over her face.
Mira	Oh, no... The professor... Everybody there... I just don't understand it. The professor is so powerful! How could the Ghost Guild have fallen with him there? Something...incredibly awful must have happened.
Narrator	Master, should we-no, never mind. There's obviously something Mira wants to say, but she hesitates. Half the day passes in this way... And there is no more word from the Ghost Guild.
Mira	Master...
Narrator	You already know what Mira wants to say. But what should you do? Master... I... I want to- "Let's go," you tell her. You've made up your mind. But, Master! Are you sure?! The letter told us to remain on standby... If we don't follow orders...
Mira	Hm? Orders don't matter at a time like this...? The professor gave us a special duty to fulfill...? ...... You know, I-I think you're right! It's our duty to always try and strengthen the bonds between ghosts and people, isn't it? And that duty takes precedence over everything right now!
Narrator	You wonder if that last part isn't a bit of a stretch, but as an excuse to get going, it'll do. Yes! Let's go, Master! Ghost Guild What happened here..? The Ghost Guild is almost entirely unrecognizable.

Miasma Over the Guild

Narrator	The air is dense with thick miasma. You've never seen anything like it before...
Amakusa Shiro	Are you folks connected to this place somehow?
Mira	Yikes! Where did you come from?! Um...yes. We are. My Master and I serve the Ghost Guild. And you are...?
Amakusa Shiro	My name is Amakusa Amakusa Shiro, but you can call me Shiro.
Mira	What?! You mean, THE famous Amakusa Amakusa Shiro? I have to say, you're not as flashy as I expected you to be.
Amakusa Shiro	Yes, well... People's imaginations often paint a picture quite different from reality.
Mira	It sounds like people's imaginations give you a lot of grief.
Amakusa Shiro	No, people are free to imagine what they will. I've accepted it.
Mira	How profound of you! I can see why they call you "heaven's messenger."
Amakusa Shiro	"Heaven's messenger," huh? Heh heh heh. Well, I won't complain.
Mira	But what are you doing here, Shiro?
Amakusa Shiro	I'm conducting a little experiment.
Mira	An experiment? What kind of experiment?
Amakusa Shiro	Oh, just a little investigation to see what happens when those overseeing the ghost world are ousted from power.
Mira	What...? ...... Are you saying YOU'RE the one who did this to the GHost Guild?!
Amakusa Shiro	But it must be "a message from heaven," right? Heh heh heh...
Mira	Hey! Come back here!

Ghost Guild Grounds 1-3[]

The Chase Is On

Mira	Master, that Amakusa Shiro fellow knows a lot more than he's saying! I'm sure of it! Let's get after him!
Narrator	Just then, a sudden gust of wind blows in even more of the miasma in great drifting billows. Cough, cough!
Mira	I-I'm fine... I refuse to let a few wisps of miasma hold me back! It's much too quite around here... I wonder what it means? There's no sign of the professor, either... Where could everybody be? You don't think they could be- No, no. Of course not. I refuse to believe it. Master, we have to find Amakusa Shiro!

Mira	Hmm...? I could've sworn I felt the presence of a ghost just now... The miasma is so thick that it's hard to get a clear sense, but I definitely felt something... There's somebody nearby! We have to be careful, Master!

Mira	What are you talking about? We didn't hear any voice.
Calabash Standard	In that case, it must mean the message was not for you... and we are mortally opposed!
Mira	H-Hey! What's the big idea, attacking us like that?!
Calabash Standard	I do not understand... I just do not understand...
Mira	Huh? He seems...strange somehow... Do you suppose...he's under some kind of supernatural control? Master, let's set this ghost free!

Amakusa Shiro's Power

Mira

Hmm... This area seems to be surrounded by some sort of supernatural force...

I've never felt anything this powerful before. I don't think even Emperor Sutoku could do something like this...
This power seems to be affecting all ghosts in the area.
We'd better be careful.
It seems this Amakusa Shiro is really someone to be feared. Does he really have power great enough to do all this?
We have to hurry up and find him and put a stop to his terrible plot!

Mira	Master... I wonder what happened to the professor and the others... I refuse to believe the Ghost Guild could ever be defeated by evil! I bet they're somewhere waiting for us right now! You think so, too, right? I'm glad! Maybe that letter we got was nothing but a trap.

Mira	Do you remember, Master? Remember that time we went to see the guardians?
	Oh, right. The guard dog, rat and fox. We went to visit them all. As I recall, that was here in Kyoto, too, wasn't it.
Mira	There's something about this that reminds me of that time. "Really? What is it?" you ask Mira. I feel like some kind of magic has been cast over everything...

Mira	This heavy miasma... This atmosphere of menace... I can't help thinking this is all artificial...an illusion...
Amakusa Shiro	Heh heh heh.

High-Handed Ways

Amakusa Shiro	Wow, you're a mighty impressive daemon.
Mira	Of course I am! I'm Mira, the daemon of the great <Player's name>!
Amakusa Shiro	Let me explain something to you so you understand. Are you ready?
Mira	Er, okay. What is it?
Amakusa Shiro	You really didn't need to exert yourself trying to figure it all out. Experimental animals should simply accept the fate laid out for them The great god will be their savior.
Mira	W-We don't have to stand here and listen to this! Right, Master?
Amakusa Shiro	I'm getting the feeling you're about to try and stop me and my grand experiment. Am I right?
Mira	Of course! Return the Ghost Guild to the way it was this instant!
Amakusa Shiro	I won't do it!
Mira	My master and I won't let you get away with this, you know!
Amakusa Shiro	Then I'll be seeing you at the main palace.
Mira	Now hold on a min- He's gone! He's one slippery fellow, all right... We'd better hurry to the main palace!

Amakusa Shiro	I'm nowhere close to the results I achieved at Shimabara... It must be this unfamiliar time period that's playing havoc with my experiments. Then there's that ghost agent and[Mira... They definitely have some plot in mind. I need to claw it out of them. Heh heh heh.

Mira	We'll be at the main palace soon! This area is full of a horrible miasma We can cleanse the area as we go.

Mira	Hmm? Who's that?
Cherub	You there, common spirit. Tell me, what brings you this way?
Mira	Hello there. Who are you?
Cherub	Nobody you should be concerned about. I'm simply a sword in the service of a god. I ask you once more. Why do you travel this way?
Mira	Well, that should be obvious, silly! We've come to put a stop to Amakusa Shiro's violent ways!
Cherub	An enemy of Shiro's, you say? In that case, today you will meet your end.

Character	Dialogue
Mira	(Puff... Pant...) So what exactly are you to Amakusa hiro?
Cherub	I am his guardian. A guardian of the great Amakusa Shiro, who wields power equal to the gods.
Mira	His guardian? Even with these crazy "experiments" of his?
Cherub	All his experimentation is simply to understand the object of people's desires.
Mira	What are you talking about?
Cherub	Surely you must have heard of his successes at Shimbara.
Mira	Oh, we know all about his "successes."
Cherub	You know nothing! By controlling the minds of peasants, he was able to defy great powers that were otherwise impossible to defeat.
Mira	You mean...?! All that was for the sake of his experiments?
Cherub	That is correct. But I am afraid that, this time, it is not working out as planned.
Mira	Oh, it's not going well, then?
Cherub	Hmm. What interesting intruders you are. I will be watching you.. Have no doubt of that!
Mira	Wait! Where are you going?! Why don't you just come along with us, then?

Ghost Guild Main Palace 4-2[]

The Big Picture

Mira	Master? What do you suppose Shiro is trying to accomplish by all this?
Narrator	He said he was conducting an experiment... A test of something or someone.
Mira	He's...testing something? You might be right. What was it that little angel told us? "Amakusa Shiro is trying to understand the object of people's desires." You don't think all the bad things happening to the Ghost Guild are down to humans, do you? ...... Well, I guess we won't get anywhere just wondering about it Let's go find that Shiro!

Ghost Guild Main Palace 4-3[]

Human Desires

Mira	There he is!
Amakusa Shiro	So you got past Cherub, then?
Mira	We know what your experiment's about, you know.
Amakusa Shiro	So Cherub told you? You can't trust anyone with a secret these days. I guess that's what I deserve for talking to that blabbermouth.
Mira	Nobody cares about that right now! Tell us right now! Tell us exactly what you plan to do!
Amakusa Shiro	I am merely bringing form to the desires that have been poured into me.
Mira	Desires...? What are you talking about?
Amakusa Shiro	There are no limits to what humans desire. Strength beauty, speed. Comfort, convenience, satisfaction. Nothing is more important to them than their goal of fulfilling these.
Mira	But what's so wrong with that? People struggle on in life to enjoy all the good things it has to offer. At least, that's what I think.
Amakusa Shiro	You're wrong. Humans always take the path of least resistance at the expense of others. If someone else can bear the burden of their pain, so be it, they think.
Mira	Not that I agree with you, but what has this got to do with anything?
Amakusa Shiro	I am merely bringing form to these desires that have been poured into me. If one of those desires is to exterminate all ghosts, then that is my task.
Mira	Are you trying to say that the desires of humans are responsible for the attack on the Ghost Guild?
Amakusa Shiro	To that question, there is but one answer...
Mira	What a surprise! There he goes! Let's get after him, Master!

Mira	The main palace is just up ahead. That's strange... The miasma around the main palace looks...weak. I imagined it would be much thicker than this. Well, you'll hear no complaints from me. Let's head in! We need to hurry!

Answers, At Last?

Amakusa Shiro	...Welcome.
Mira	You won't get away this time!
Amakusa Shiro	Do not worry. No more hide and seek. For, just as everything has a beginning, so too must it have an end.
Mira	I've just about enough of this cryptic nonsense! We want answers, Shiro.
Amakusa Shiro	Hmph. If you wish, I will explain it in simple terms. But you must show me your power.

The Experiment

Mira	You see? We're not messing around.
Amakusa Shiro	It is becoming clear now. All is clear to me.
Mira	Oi! You've got some explaining to do. What is this all about?
Amakusa Shiro	An experiment, just as I explained to you.
Mira	That's what we don't understand! Be specific.
Amakusa Shiro	I want to see if ghost agents and their daemons can reach this place. Nothing more, nothing less.
Mira	What?
Amakusa Shiro	And I am pleased to say you did exactly that. Which means Yata wins...
Mira	Professor Yata? What are you talking about?!
Amakusa Shiro	In an effort to save themselves, humans will trample over others... whether they mean to, or no. Do you know of Shimbara? Those simple-minded folk were quick to make me their ruler. No one showed the will to lead.
Mira	And you think that's the nature of human desires?
Amakusa Shiro	From what I can see, you are not humans.
Mira	H-Hey! My master is a great human, I'll have you know! Grrrrr...
Amakusa Shiro	Yes, I sense it clearly. The aura emanating from you is closer to those like us.
Mira	You're not making one bit of sense!
Amakusa Shiro	I tire of this conversation. My experiment is a failure. I must leave this land.
Mira	Where will you go?
Amakusa Shiro	Spirits are nomadic in nature, and have no home to return to.
Mira	Master! He might be a bit of an oddball, but there's no denying his abilities. Why don't you try negotiating with him?
